Are Cats or Dogs Better Pets

A pet, whether a cat or a dog, brings comfort and a sense of relaxation at home. This article highlights some of the important considerations that one must follow in order to choose the best cat or dog.

A dog for a pet

Socializing is very important to almost every breed of dog. You need to start communicating with your dog early enough. Research dog breeds before purchasing one to be certain you have enough space for certain breeds. Keeping a dog as a pet for the first time will occasionally make you to wash your carpet or clean your compound. You will have to train your dog to either let you know when he or she needs to go outside or to use a particular place. Using a training dog crate is the most popular way to potty train a puppy quickly.

You may also require extra cash if your puppies will first be contained in a doggy daycare. One-year-old puppies need your attention every hour but you may shorten the time when they grow.

A cat for a pet

Many people would choose a cat over a dog any day. Cats don’t need near the running room as dogs do and they are quite comfortable without a lot of attention from their owners. A cat’s litter box will be a continuous chore to clean. The stench of the litter box is the biggest drawback of owning a cat.

How do you make the final decision?

Primarily your own likes and dislikes will determine which pet to keep. Your normal daily life may also dictate whether a cat or a dog is the most appropriate pet for you. If your work schedule is tight, you may decide to keep a cat, as it requires less time to train. Before you decide on your pet’s breed , a thorough research will help you in choosing that pet which agrees to your tastes.

Learn More About Dog Training And Obedience.

As your pup’s first lesson, you can teach him to sit. There are several good reasons why you should start with this command. First, sitting comes naturally to dogs since they often sit to rest. Two, teaching the pup to sit is relatively easy, a lesson that he will learn very quickly. You will also find the sit position to be an excellent base or jump-off from which other commands can be launched. When the pup is sitting, he is quiet and under control. When it comes to the sit position, it is akin to the five basic foot positions of the ballet dancer.

The sit position has practical applications, it is not just a trick. You will find the sit useful at intersections when you are walking the pup or when meeting a friend and in various other situations where you want the dog to be quiet and under control.

The lesson should be started with the pup on the leash. You can place him on your left side; later he’ll be walking or heeling from that position. Hold the leash in your right hand, give the command “Sit!” and lift up on the leash. This will raise the pup’s head. Push down on his rear end with your left hand. These movements should be repeated until the pup sits down without your having to lean on him. Then, you can give the command and unsnap the leash. If he sits down only halfway or balks, you can put him on the leash and start over. What he will learn soon is that he has to obey otherwise, he will be restrained with the leash. When he gets the lesson right, you can praise him well.

Use your left hand to push down on his rear end. Repeat these movements until the pup sits down without your having to lean on him. Then unsnap the leash and give the command. Put him back on the leash and start over if he balks or sits down only halfway. He’ll soon learn that when he doesn’t obey, he’ll be restrained with the leash. Make sure to praise him when he gets the lesson right.

The hand signal may have its best use when working at a distance such as in the field but there are also many situations where you will find it to be useful. One such example is when there is too much noise for your dog to hear your voice.

      How Dogs Communicate

Dogs are one of the intelligent animals among the domestic pets. They have the ability to communicate with humans, other dogs and even other animals. They do this by using body signs and different vocals. The signs are made with the help of body movement involving eyes, ears, eyebrows, head, mouth and tail. Different vocals include barks, howls, growls, whimpers and whines. In order to know how to stop dogs from barking, you need to know what they are trying to say. Dogs will gesture to show their mood in a given situation. Like if a dog pants, it can mean that the dog is feeling hot or the dog is happy or anxious.

Confident and higher ranked dogs have a high held tail. Dogs have the feeling of submission and dominance in them. This is because in the wild they would live in packs. They have hierarchy within the group. Weaker dogs will give in to dominant ones. For this reason they will drop their tail when feeling unsure. When the dogs fight for dominance, the fur on their tail stands up. They and even other animals, do this to increase their size in front of their enemy. Even squirrels and mice do the same.

When the dog is in a confused situation, it wags its tail slowly. They are in a process of figuring out whether they should accept the situation or time or else, they have still not accepted the situation completely, but are in the process. Excited dogs wag their tails very fast. If the hip moves along with the tail, it means the dog is ready for submission to a dog of higher rank.

When the dogs get aggressive they show their fangs. If the teeth are visible, it indicates that the dog is ready to bite or attack. They also show teeth when they smile and this is an indication of submissiveness. The number of teeth on display is a sign of a smile or a snarl. A happy face will display only the front teeth, but the gums and all his teeth will be visible if he snarls. You can tell how attentive a dog is by his ears. When the ears are erect and forward facing, means the dog is concentrating. But when the dog fears something, it lays down its ears. To show their happiness some dogs will hold their ears forwards.

In majority of the cases, barking is done to scare away stranger and to make the owner aware of an intruder. They also tend to bark while they are playing. They use to even convey emotions such as pleasure, fear, stress and suspicion. When the dog is excited or is playing, the barks are sharp and short. A dog will bark repeatedly when stressed or anxious. They also bark to communicate with other animals such as cat, deer, squirrel, fox and other dogs. But the sound of barking is different.

Growling is done to threaten or to show superiority. Dogs howl when they make long-range communication. A dog yawns when it is bored and needs to be left alone. Like humans, he will yawn when tired or stressed. When the dog pants with a full open mouth, it is happy. When it pants with a slightly open mouth, it needs to be played with. Dogs lift one forelimb up, when it wants to play. It will stamp its front limbs when it is excited. They will scratch objects that they desire. Like humans, domestic dogs are trained to shake hands. They hold out a paw forward and exchange a handshake. If the dog tilts it’s head in a particular direction, it means that it is trying to concentrate and recognize an unfamiliar sound.

Caring For Your Dog – What Every Dog Owner Should Know

Social animals that have worked with humans for thousands of years are dogs. They have played an important role in various different cultures. Dogs are intelligent and loyal and because of that, they are highly valued and it is important to train and care for them properly.

Despite the importance of dogs, owners may find that there are many challenges in training and caring for them. Owning a dog is what many people want but unfortunately, there are only a few who know how to train them properly. A dog will not bring happiness to its owners if it is not disciplined. Allowing their dogs to develop their bad habits is what too many people tend to do.

You want to make sure you purchase quality food for your dog, even if its a bit expensive. Cheap dog food won’t give your dog the healthy look it should have. A shiny coat and bright eyes is what you want your dog to have. Since dogs are much like their owners, they will then behave in many of the same ways.

Dogs should be treated like small children since they are just like them. You should not leave dogs alone for long periods of time since they are prone to getting into trouble. When dogs are left alone at home, they need to have a designated area with boundaries. To keep them occupied, leave some things such as chew toys.

When your dog behaves properly, make sure that you always praise and reward him. This teaches him that good behavior leads to rewards, while bad behavior does not. When you do this, you will find that your dog behaves properly on a regular basis. When your dog doesn’t behave properly, you should also discipline him, so that he understands the difference between right and wrong behavior.

There is a difference between abuse and discipline. Since some dog owners don’t understand this, they end up either hitting or kicking their dog in order to train them. This is abuse and may even consider your dog to attack you and it is also not an effective way to train your dog. You don’t want your dog to be afraid of you but rather, you want him to respect you.

A good way to discipline your dog without hitting him is to spray water on him and give him a verbal warning. In a non-abusive way, this will get the message across. When it comes to training your dog, it is very important. A dog which you can take out for a walk without worrying about him or bothering others is what you would want. You want a dog that will listen to your commands.

Dog Fleas – Causing More Than Just Itching

          Simple facts about dog fleas.

In terms of reproduction, fleas are probably the most successful creatures on the planet. There are over 2,400 species and for a variety of reasons, they are difficult to control: In one month, one female will produce 25,000 offspring. It’s possible for an unfed adult to live for several months. The eggs are not affected by the chemicals that are used to eradicate adult dog fleas. It’s a fact that fleas are good at mutating in order to resist pesticides.

Fleas are a menace to dogs! You can expect them to cause allergic dermatitis, tapeworms, and anemia. Most of the eggs are not laid on the dog but in the dog’s bedding, in the rug, and on the furniture. Completely eradicating fleas is an extremely difficult task. Controlling them and also keeping your dog reasonably comfortable during the warm and most flea season is the most you can hope for.

The best way to control dog fleas is to remove them from your dog and your house. Have him bathed with veterinarian-approved flea shampoo when you take him to a groomer for the day. If you spray or dip him with residual pesticide, this will have little or no lasting effect. To spray the carpets and the furniture, hire a company that uses a non-toxic product while he is out of the house. These companies usually guarantee a flea-free home for one year.

There are dogs who are bothered more by the use of pesticides than they are bothered by fleas. Sprays, flea collars, shampoos, and even powders are loaded with pesticides. So watch out! If your dog is into serious scratching, your veterinarian can prescribe medication for the itching. Discussing which products you should use on your pet in order for him or her to get rid of dog fleas is also very important to remember. There are a lot of products on the market that claim to get rid of fleas; not all of them work and some could be harmful to your dog.

An important thing you need to do from this point on is to vacuum the carpets, furniture, and even your dog’s bedding everyday. The cut-off end of a flea collar or a moth crystal can be placed into your vacuum cleaner bag in order to kill any vacuumed adult fleas. You can vacuum the dog if he lets you. Use a flea comb to groom him daily. You shouldn’t be surprised if you occasionally find a flea on him. He will bring them in from outside. Keep in mind that you can only control them and you can’t get rid of them.

We Love This A Whole Lot – Homemade Dog Food Critique

I didn’t want to pay $2 a pound for a high quality food and Canidae was just right for my budget and quality needs. My dog loves it (but you can’t really judge it on that alone as he is a lab and will eat anything) however his coat is nice, his stool is the right consistency, and he is hardly ever ill.

My dog transitioned from the shelter food to Canidae effortlessly and I saw an improvement in her coat, stool, and energy level. When the formula changed she also did wonderfully. In addition the “Grain Free” caught my eye, since I was contemplating going to a raw diet. From my research the Canidae “Grain Free” formula is as close as you can get to “natural” diet without committing to raw food. I guess my animals (cat and dog) can’t read the famous names on bag wrappings, as they almost refuse to eat this stuff unless nothing else available and they are hungry. This food is organic, sure. I’m still not happy about this incident. I decided not to pursue it any longer, but I still feel people should know.

I fed and recommended this food for several years as one of the best dry foods available. However, over the last few months (late 2007) something has changed. Prior to that I used NutroMax. Wow, what an amazing food. I like the 4-pound bags for freshness because my dog is small and takes a while to eat that much, but there are other sizes available to suit larger dogs. I like Newman’s Own for my family due to its consistent quality and good ingredients; I like have the opportunity to provide the same quality products to my animals.

Anyway, I started giving them more raw food and the gas has disappeared and my girl sheltie no longer has anal gland issues. Their teeth are cleaner too.

She usually gobbles it up the minute I put it into the bowl. We only feed our dog dry food, and it has to be good dog food.

I then checked on line and found many complaints about Canidae. I am a professional dog groomer that recommended this food until now. My dogs will not touch the harmony farms, yet love this dog food. Both my dogs love it. During the time it took to slowly switch foods (14 days) my jacks had already gained weight and were looking much better. After 3 weeks we had to reduce their food because they were getting fat! The chicken is not organic. This is NOT organic dog food.

In addition to my issues, my breeder, who recommended the food to me, and who has been feeding her dogs Canidae for much longer than I, has taken her dogs off the food. Her dogs became violently ill, vomiting non-stop, itching, acting lethargic.

I like that this is a reasonably priced organic dog food that is readily available. CAR WINDOW REPLACEMENT COST.

A Research Guide To The Process Of Buying Dog Food

Imagine the horror one probably feels down his/her spine while taking an innocuous walk down a dog food aisle. Think of the shivers that run down your spine as you are overwhelmed by a multitude of brands and varieties. Pet food is big business these days, and you can bet America’s manufacturers of pet food want your money and attention in the worst way possible. But how would you make the right decision and settle on the best food for your dog?

If you want to be confident in selecting the right food for your dog, you have to mull things over quite carefully. Different dogs have different nutritional needs at different stages in their lives. But fortunately for you, we have just a few considerations you will want to prioritize above the rest.

Age. When compared to adult dogs, puppies do not quite have the same nutritional requirements as adult dogs – this is quite similar to how children and adult humans have varying needs. Likewise, a senior dog has its own requirements that differ from those of a younger adult dog. Make sure that you select a food that is appropriate for your dog’s stage in life.

Health. Does your dog have a specific medical condition? If so, the food you choose may need to be partially dictated by that condition. Diabetic dogs need low-glucose foods and dogs with specific allergies (yes dogs can be allergic to all sorts of things, just like people) may require certain foods as well. When in doubt, the first person you always should be consulting would be your pet’s veterinarian.

How large/fit is your dog? Like humans, some dogs are obese. Some dogs are underweight. Some have that predilection to get as much exercise as they want, while others will take up space on your rug and just lie there. There are different size dogs, from those miniature toy breeds to behemoth St. Bernards, and everything in between. Bottom line is, the size or fitness level of your dog would partly determine their food type, not to mention the size of their portions.

Budget. Dog food can be expensive, there is no doubt about it. And just like it is with other types of purchases, you get what you pay for. Let’s put it this way – you will certainly be saving a few dollars on buying a store brand or a generic brand, but these cheap (as opposed to inexpensive) brands provide oh-so-little sustenance because of their mediocre quality and ingredients. In order to ensure that your dog remains healthy and well-fed, don’t settle for anything less than the best dog food.

In a nutshell, these are the things you must quickly think about the next time you shop for dog food if you want your Little Buddy to be big in the health department.

                  What Are Non-Shedding Dog Breeds?

There are a lot of people who would love to own a pet dog but they are wary of the potential mess that shed dog hair can cause in their homes. What these people want for a companion is a dog that doesn’t shed. What’s unfortunate is that there is no such thing as a dog that doesn’t shed at all. Just like people do, all dogs will also shed and replace at least some of their hair, just like people do. Some breeds, however, do shed less than others and you can keep the shedding mess to a minimum if you choose one of these breeds.

                  1. Airedale Terrier

The Airedale terrier is a large terrier with a rough coat that sheds very little. Although these dogs can be good with children, it’s essential for socialization to start early in the dog’s life. Chances are, they may play too roughly for small children. These dogs are also very naturally curious and not easily coaxed away from something that catches their interest and these are also loyal and trainable dogs. Usually, the Airedale grows to about 22-24 inches in height and a weight of 50-65 pounds.

                  Cockapoo

Reminiscent of the Poodle, especially in the face, is the Cockapoo. It has a short, curly coat and does not shed much but does require above average grooming. Actually, it is a cross between the American Cocker Spaniel and the Poodle, which is the reason for its name and appearance (Cocker + Poodle = Cockapoo). These dogs are very friendly, loyal, and playful. Aside from being good with children and other dogs, they are also typically very easy to train.

                  Italian Greyhound

A miniature Greyhound is the Italian Greyhound. When it comes to the body style of this dog, it is nearly exactly alike that of his racing cousins, but in a convenient, compact size. These dogs are gentle and submissive. They become very emotionally attached to their people. They are obedient and easy to train, but prone to mischief – and they know when they’ve been naughty. If children are well behaved, then they get along well with them. But if the kids are rambunctious and high strung, then the dogs will be as well. It is best in a quiet household. The coat of the Italian Greyhound is short and sleek and they don’t shed much at all.

                  4. Miniature Poodle

Not truly a breed all to itself, but one of the three AKC recognized sizes of Poodles is the Miniature Poodle. They shed very little just like all Poodles but their short, curly coats require considerable grooming. Not only that, they are very intelligent, playful, and quite trainable. Generally, they get along well with children, but they can be sensitive or nervous around rowdy kids. They feel that they have to be a part of all family activities and they can also easily integrate with a family. Most of the time, they will act as though they’ve been slighted if not included in family activities.

3 Cool Gifts Your Pet Will Love

So you plan to get your beloved pet an awesomely cool gift this Christmas. Well done! Your pet deserves it. Ever since Lassie and Rin Tin Tin – in fact, even before that – pets have held a special place in the hearts and minds of the American public. Why? Because they exhibit many of the traits that we admire in ourselves: loyalty, bravery, devotion, etc. What’s more, their affection for their owners is always sincere (which isn’t something you can always say about people).

Thus, it’s really not surprising that people feel impelled to shower their pets with love and affection: they spend freely to make sure their dog or cat is always pampered; their pets accompany them wherever they go (and owners frequently won’t deign to visit places where their pet isn’t permitted); they regularly dress up their kitty-cat or pooch, especially for holidays (e.g., Halloween and Christmas).

Moreover, owners often have a holiday shopping list for their pet, looking to locate that one great present or toy. It is as tough as shopping for any other member of your family, and let’s face it: pets are just as much family as anyone else in your house. With that in mind, below are three cool gifts that your pet would undoubtedly appreciate getting their paws on this Christmas:

Frolicat Interactive Laser Pet Toy: This awesome little device will keep your pet – in particular cats – busy for quite some time. Basically, it generates random laser patterns for your pet to play with. Or, if set in the manual mode, you could point the laser dot anyplace you like and watch your pet pursue it. All in all, it’s an incredible toy that your pet is unlikely to tire of.

Scoopfree Self-Cleaning litter Box: Needless to say, cat owners may get far more benefits out of this gift than the cat (much like the man who buys his wife a bowling ball for their anniversary). There is no cleaning or scooping to deal with, it works for weeks at a time, and owners never have to handle any pet wastes or the like.

Lectro Soft Outside Bed: Your pet will think you’re the cat’s meow for this cool gift: a heated pet pad. Ideal for either outdoor or indoor use, your pet will have no problem staying warm with this pad – even in cold weather. Additionally, it’s especially helpful for older animals.

In essence, for all those still searching for a cool gift for their pet this year, all 3 of the items noted above would be met thanks and delight. Your dog or cat will enjoy them immensely, and because your pets enjoy them, you will as well.
