Ensuring Your Dog’s Safety And Comfort When Traveling
Taking your dog along on trips can be a very fun and rewarding experience. There are quite a few hotels that allow you to bring your dog along and some offer discounts from time to time.
These are some useful tips for traveling with a dog:
1. Find a hotel that allows dogs and do book early.
There are useful websites with information on hotels that allow dogs. There may be restrictions on the number of dogs allowed as well as hidden fees so make sure to double check with the hotel before booking.
2. Your dog should be fully vaccinated before traveling.
If you are traveling abroad it will be necessary to get vaccinations at least 30 days before traveling. Your dog will also need the bordatella vaccine if you plan to leave him boarded to prevent kennel cough. Don’t forget distemper and lyme disease shots, both can cause serious problems. To be safe take your dog to the vet to ensure that all shots are up to date. If traveling abroad make sure you know all travel requirements for the foreign country to avoid delays and other issues when you arrive.
3. Have dog identification available at all times.
Make sure all collars, tags etc. have your contact information listed such as your name and address in the event your dog gets lost. It may be worth the added expense of getting your dog microchiped. Also you should always have two collars available just in case one is misplaced or breaks. This is important since your dog may not be comfortable in the unfamiliar environment and may try to get away. Identification is therefore very important.
4. Keep your dog cool.
Dogs can overheat fairly quickly and do get dehydrated, it is therefore important to never leave a dog alone in a car. If you need to leave your car make sure there is another person to look out for your dog. Dog panting is normal as dogs do not have sweat glands. Make sure to have lots of water available to keep your dog from getting thirsty.
5. Have your dog’s medical records available at all times.
Health records will be important in the unlikely event your dog gets ill while abroad. This will be necessary for any trip to the animal hospital. These documents may also be needed when leaving the country, they will be used to verify your dog’s health.
By following these steps traveling with your dog will be much easier.
